Speedrunner Miniland Ties Super Mario Bros. TAS to World 8

Speedrunning Super Mario Bros. 1 on NES The original Super Mario Bros for the NES has an incredibly long and rich history when it comes to speedrunning. Its history includes the efforts of a handful of talented runners who have pushed the game to its absolute limits. Early runners like AndrewG, Darbian, and Kosmic helped bring the world record down to an astonishing time of 4 minutes and 55 seconds. In recent years, two runners have been pushing this game to an entirely new level, namely, Niftski and Miniland. Niftski and Miniland were the first and second runners, respectively, to break the 4:55 barrier. These two speedrunners traded the record back and forth before Niftski eventually reclaimed the top spot. He currently has the world record speedrun of 4:54.881. Niftski’s accomplishm...

Can You Beat Minecraft in Under 10 Minutes?

Wow, it has been an INSANE month for Minecraft speedrunning. The community managed to break sub-14 minutes. Not only that, but sub-12 was achieved. Can you imagine beating Minecraft (see also 'What Is Looting In Minecraft?') in under 14 or even 12 minutes? If beating the game in under 12 minutes is possible, then is beating Minecraft in under 10 minutes possible? Let's take a look at the past four world records (all in the same month) to see if it is. Please note that speedrun.com looks at the in-game time rather than real-time. Illumina's 13:53 YouTuber and speedrunner Illumina managed to pull off a sub-14 right at the beginning of the month. This was the first sub-14 run of Minecraft ever. How did he do it? Illumina started out about a hundred or so blocks away from a vill...

Grand Poo World 2 Any% – New World Record in 46:53

Grand Poo World 2 is a Kaizo Super Mario World made by the incredibly entertaining BarbarousKing and is considered one of the most difficult non-TAS Kaizos out there. It is also one of the most popular. Every single jump of every single level of the game is very hard and can kill the player multiple times, so some serious grinding is required to beat the game by the first time. Despite the steep difficulty, the game and level design is truly incredible -- and the whole game is extremely fun to play. The setups in each level seem to work perfectly, which is hard to accomplish while making a Super Mario World rom hack. This makes each death only the player's fault and not the game itself. Quick note from SpeedGamingNews: This article was written by Rotciv__. Please go check o...

Maxam and Muty’s Race for Sub 27 in Half-Life

In the realm of speedrunning, all achievements seem to pale in comparison to the world record run that breaks a long-awaited time barrier for many speedrunners and viewers alike. For those initiated in the community, these runs, both classic and modern, immediately spring to mind. In recent memory, Dwhatever’s grind in the 70 star category of Super Mario 64 is a shining example -- months of work poured into shaving off frames, all to finally break the 47 minute barrier by tenths of a second this past June. The dedication of top speedrunners to their game is what drives our grassroots community forward, and seeing talent and hard work finally accumulate into a singular blissful moment of success is a breathtaking experience to witness. Dwhatever and Super Mario 64 were not the only particip...

Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix Any% — Improved World Record

In the hype of Kingdom Hearts 3, a little over a week ago speedrunner MistMaster1 improved his personal best in Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix, Any% - PS4 Beginner category by 47 seconds. Already holding the world record prior to this accomplishment, Mist continues to remain at the top of the leaderboards  with a  time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 48 seconds. Funnily enough, he just PB'd a few days before this as well.   Kingdom Hearts 1 is the first in the Action RPG series originally made for the Playstation 2. The game is included on the PS4 1.5 & 2.5 Collection along with 5 other KH games. The run started on a very strong pace. There was plenty of quality gameplay and a fast boss battle with Guard Armor. However, after Wonderland, mist started having a difficult time. ...

I Wanna Kill the Kamilia 3 — An Insane World Record

Just 15 days ago FazzTW got a world record in one of the most challenging 2D speedgames, I Wanna Kill the Kamilla 3 (also known as K3). FazzTW finished the game with a remarkable time of 2:50:26 and making his the first sub 3 hour run in the 3 plus years of Any% runs! This beat out Twitch streamer Stonk, formerly StinkyCheeseOne890, who had an already impressive speedrun of 3:02:20.   However, the 2:50:26 didn’t stand for long. (Enough already! Just show me the world record I'm here to watch!) K3 is an intense precision platformer with crazy boss fights and puzzles. Several fights require the player to only avoid attacks while other sections require attacking. There is even a boss battle where you must play minesweeper while avoiding attacks! The game, even outside of a spe...

The Best Speedrun Timer – Which Timer to Use For Speedrunning?

I recall when I was getting ready for the very first speedrun I was super excited, but I quickly found myself not sure of which timer I should use for speedrunning. I found myself asking which timer is the absolute best for speedrunning? The simple answer is that there actually is an overall best speedrun timer. The most common timer used for speedrunning is LiveSplit. LiveSplit is a user-friendly timer program that includes features such as time comparisons, automated split colors, and various theme options. The timer accurately displays data to the hundredth of a second and includes a speedrun leaderboard integration. With that said, "best" is based on your situation and preferences. You will be best off with a timer unique to your setup and interests. In this article, we'll cover ...

Arcus hits his goal!

19 weeks ago, Arcus set his goal time for Zelda 1 to any time below 30 minutes. His grind started off really tough, with nearly every minute saved being a new milestone in his journey. Just in recent days he had many runs inching close to a sub 30, but they just didn't make it for one reason or another. There are just so many variables in a run of Zelda. From manipulating enemy movement, health management can gain or lose plenty of time at the end of each dungeon, keeping track of your enemy kill count, of course many elements of RNG, switching between multiple routes depending on what is made available during the run itself... it makes for lots of ways to succeed, but so many more ways to fail. This was the run. 31.4 seconds ahead out of level 5 may have been his best pace ever. That wa...
