Top 10 AGDQ 2019 Speedruns That We Look Forward To!

As most of you know, Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 is right around the corner, and today I’m going to walk you through the top 10 speedruns that I am most excited for in the upcoming marathon: 10. Luigi’s Mansion - No OOB - HDlax1 A launch title for the Gamecube, Luigi’s Mansion is a game that many people know and love. It is also a highly competitive speedrun, with the top 8 times on the leaderboards being within around 1 Minute from the world record. The run is super exciting to watch, as there is a very interesting strat for all of the bosses. You get a mini adrenaline rush every time Luigi starts to vacuum up a Boo, leading to very intense moments, especially towards the end of the run. HD is a very experienced Luigi’s Mansion runner, having ran the game at SGDQ 2017. Luigi’s Mansion h...

SUN: Speedrun Updates & News #2 — 12/19/18

Hello! Welcome to SUN! The show that keeps you informed for all of the Updates and News in the speedrunning community. Starting with the world records for this week, Ian_Miles29 set a new The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Any% world record of 58:09. This was a 32 second time save over the previous world record which he also held. This run made use of an improved setup for a notoriously difficult trick known as door clip. Previously, this door clip was one of the most inconsistent parts of the Any% run so this new setup is a welcome sight for Any% speedrunners. The Portal 2 Co-operative mode world record was beaten this week by the runners Msushi and Can't Even. This 21 minute 38 second run crushed the previous world record by 5 minutes thanks to a new route which skips ...

The Best Speedrun Timer – Which Timer to Use For Speedrunning?

I recall when I was getting ready for the very first speedrun I was super excited, but I quickly found myself not sure of which timer I should use for speedrunning. I found myself asking which timer is the absolute best for speedrunning? The simple answer is that there actually is an overall best speedrun timer. The most common timer used for speedrunning is LiveSplit. LiveSplit is a user-friendly timer program that includes features such as time comparisons, automated split colors, and various theme options. The timer accurately displays data to the hundredth of a second and includes a speedrun leaderboard integration. With that said, "best" is based on your situation and preferences. You will be best off with a timer unique to your setup and interests. In this article, we'll cover ...

Interview with Jay_Cee – Battletoads WR

Jay_Cee, one of our favorite speedrunners, has recently achieved yet another world record. We got a hold of him, and we are excited to announce our first public interview! Jay_cee and Christian Sears chat about speedrunning battletoads and review the run that stands in first place on the leaderboards. Jay_Cee has now moved on to the 100% category in Battletoads, and the next game on his list is Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. The unfortunate thing is, Jay_Cee already holds 1st place in CVII, but Twitch had an error and the video is forever lost. Knowing Jay_Cee as well as we do, he'll have another video to replace it soon -- so be sure to check out his Twitch channel! A full 16 minutes of discussion, and it's not even close to enough to cover everything there is to say about this run. ...

This Week in Speedrunning

Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, events, an NES classic -- this week has been huge for speedruns. Let's check it out. Contra 11 months ago, Angrylanks took a long-standing world record from DK28 in the Nintendo classic, Contra. DK's time of 9:53.834 has stood for 3 years, and Angrylanks only inched forward with a time 0.034 seconds faster -- 9:53:8. Well, Angrylanks has unparalleled dedication, and he pushed that 9:53 lower and lower over these 11 months. Finally, he broke through that barrier. After a tough and ongoing battle, Lanks achieved an incredible 9:52.850. If you don't know Angrylanks, we highly recommend you check out his twitch channel. Not only is he incredibly good at any game he puts his mind to, he's also a great drummer and an all around great guy. Skyward Sword A...

OoT Ganon’s Castle Cutscene Skip

This article is not original content. This is only a reconstruction of a pastebin created by Zfg. This is only being reposted because we consider it highly valuable speedrunning information, and wanted to display it in a way that keeps you on a single page. The only edits of the original post are grammar, punctuation, capitalization, embedding links, and a little bit of styling or rephrasing if necessary. Without further ado, read about the new route improvements -- originally written by Zfg: A few days ago a new clip was found in Ganon's castle escape that lets us get out of bounds and skip all the way to the end of the castle collapse -- without even having to watch the cutscene for the collapse starting. This saves more time than simply getting out of caste collapse faster ...

MK64 All Cups WR Highlights

After more than 14 months, Mario Kart 64 All Cups has finally seen a new fastest time. With such an incredible time on the board, it takes some serious time, dedication, and maybe even a few miracles to improve upon it. On July 13th, 2018, Abney317 improved his world record time of 25m 46s 940ms (recorded in real time) by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 25m 36s 230ms! This run takes place in the faster of the two "All Cups" categories and is usually referred to as All Cups (Skips), or sometimes 150cc Skips, due to the fact that it utilizes anything it can to go faster -- skips, wall jumps, glitches, etc. Though the other All Cups category, All Cups (No Skips), allows for some minor shortcuts -- such as cutting through grass or sand, and intended shortcuts like the tunnel in Koopa Troopa ...

Resident Evil 4 Tournament underway at SpeedGaming

Get your popcorn ready because we are in for some good ol’ run & gun action over at SpeedGaming for their Resident Evil 4 Tournament. The first race in Bracket 1 saw Almightymandals go head-to-head with Top_Tear_Waifu, two really strong contenders that are already packing some impressive personal bests. This tournament of RE4 takes place in the New Game category, on Professional difficulty at 60 FPS on PC – so, no pre-saved games or broken weapons to give an advantage, and the enemies stay at their maximum difficulty with no fluctuations. We get to watch all the nitty-gritty from the very beginning, oh yess! Now, RE4 is known for having some optimization issues, even while running the Ultimate HD version at 60 FPS versus the standard 30 FPS of the older versions. Right off the bat, we...

SkiFree WR Battle!

On April 28th 2017, both TGDerp and lord_hakkis shared a tied World Record for the Tree Slalom category in the classic 1991 Microsoft game, SkiFree. It was a 53s 490ms tied WR which lasted a couple months. Lord_hakkis was able to improve his run on June 6th, 2017 and secure the record with a time of 53s 370ms, which remained untouched for more than a year. On July 5th, 2018, the time had finally been improved when a runner named rmleer, using a webcam capture, showed up on the scene with an impressive time of 53s 270ms -- cutting an entire millisecond off the record. Little did we know this would be the spark which created an explosion of record trade-offs. Rmleer’s record from July 5th was surpassed only one day later by the return of lord_hakkis with a 53s 250ms, giving him the lead by...

Arcus hits his goal!

19 weeks ago, Arcus set his goal time for Zelda 1 to any time below 30 minutes. His grind started off really tough, with nearly every minute saved being a new milestone in his journey. Just in recent days he had many runs inching close to a sub 30, but they just didn't make it for one reason or another. There are just so many variables in a run of Zelda. From manipulating enemy movement, health management can gain or lose plenty of time at the end of each dungeon, keeping track of your enemy kill count, of course many elements of RNG, switching between multiple routes depending on what is made available during the run itself... it makes for lots of ways to succeed, but so many more ways to fail. This was the run. 31.4 seconds ahead out of level 5 may have been his best pace ever. That wa...
